Where: GOVE, Northern Territory
When: 17th June 2010
Rio Tinto Alcan, GOVE
Dr Rosie King sexual health physician and Jill Naylor from Cancer Council NT were given the rare experience of visiting Gove, in remote Northern Territory, as Rio Tinto Alcan hosted a community event in the town centre for Men’s Health Week 2010. It was a headline event for the campaign, encouraging men to get more proactive and health conscious.
The day included Men’s Health Week stalls set up to provide the men from the community with information and a range of other health conscious activities including health checks and a series of presentations from both the guest speakers.
Dr Rosie King, a renowned sex therapist, addressed the importance of raising awareness about male specific health issues, also including a lively discussion on sexual health.
Jill Naylor from Cancer Council NT spoke on early detection, screening and preventative action for bowel cancer. She and Dr Rosie King remained in the town centre for the entire day, making themselves available for some one-on-one discussions with men who may not have been able to find the time to focus on their health before.
“Men’s Health is extremely important to us here at Rio Tinto Alcan in Gove. With the majority of the community here being male, we strive to create programs that educate our workforce and the community,” said Paul Dewar Health, Safety and Environment Manager for Rio Tinto Gove Operation.
Dr Rosie King and Jill Naylor were interviewed earlier in the morning on Gove fm, encouraging all men to have age appropriate health checks and to take preventative action with their health.
Men’s Health Week 2010 is an opportunity to increase awareness of important male-specific health issues. Almost all significant health risks can be reduced by simply staying fit and getting a regular check up with a GP. Men’s Health Week is the perfect chance for Australian men to get proactive about improving their lives.
The campaign encourages people to visit the campaign website www.menshealthweek.com.au to learn the facts about men’s health and for information on other events during the week.-ends-
