Men of League and the Wynnum Manly Seagulls are joining together to host a major promotional day in support of Men’s Health Week 2010.
Everything will kick off with a special Men’s Health Week and Men of League Luncheon, which will include special guest speakers, raffles, auctions and talks with team captains and coaches, all in the exclusive Wynnum Manly League’s Club Skyview room from 12pm-2pm. The Luncheon is a way to say thank you to all the sponsors whilst bringing awareness to men’s health. Tickets can be purchased for the Luncheon at $30per head.
Patrons will then be treated to the return of the very popular All Stars match as a part of the continued support for Men’s Health Week in 2010. The Men of League Allstars will give their best against the Wynnum Manly Allstars, in a clash sure to please. The year there will be some big names on both teams, including Kerrod Walters, Kevin Campion, Shane and Ben Walker and Tonie Carroll. The game kicks off at 2.15pm.
Making the event even more significant is that this year teams will be competing for the John ‘Jack’ Barber Memorial Shield, in honour of the Dolphin Rugby league icon and guest coach of last year’s match, who passed recently from cancer.
It is all part of Men of League’s continued support of Men’s Health Week, a campaign designed to promote awareness of important male specific health issues, whilst also celebrating the contribution men give to work, home and the community.
From 14-20 June, men are being provided with an opportunity to focus on physical, mental and sexual health. Men are being encouraged to start a discussion about their health with friends and family and have a checkup once a year with a GP. It’s all about men making the best choices for their lifestyle and wellbeing.

Prostate Screen Queensland will offer health conscious men easily accessible and simplified testing for Prostate Cancer by highly trained medical practitioners. Performed in a specialised primary care framework, the sole focus of the medical consultation will be discussion and education regarding prostate cancer testing and early diagnosis. Each year approximately 18000 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and 3000 men die from prostate cancer each year.
Prostate Screen Queensland currently does not recommend mass population-based prostate specific antigen (PSA) screening as a public health policy. The mission of Prostate Screen Queensland is to streamline prostate cancer testing using stringent guidelines, make prostate cancer testing easy and accessible, educate men regarding prostate cancer testing and in the process collect world class data for research purposes.
Prostate cancer testing is already being performed by many well informed general practitioners around Australia. Prostate Screen Queensland will not take over the role of the patient’s general practitioner (GP) but rather work closely with the patients GP. Using world class clinical and research software, stringent protocols for follow up and subsequent testing will be adhered to.
Who should be tested for Prostate Cancer?
PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) testing via a blood test in combination with a DRE (Digital Rectal Examination) currently offers the best indication for the presence of prostate cancer.
Early detection of prostate cancer is the key to improving survival and Prostate Screen Queensland recommends the following:
1. All men from the age of 50 should have access to a yearly PSA and DRE
2. All men who have a family history of prostate cancer should have access to a yearly PSA and DRE from the age of 40
3. Health conscious men from the age of 40 should have access to a baseline PSA to quantify their lifetime risk of prostate cancer and guide the frequency of subsequent testing. If the risk of prostate cancer is significant then discussion regarding prostate cancer prevention with medical therapy can be undertaken.
this event will focus on men's health education and assessments in line with the Breastscreen bus currently located in Hamilton. this event will focus on the education and support of men in line with women who actively undertake screening and ongoing health assessments. Two men's health educators Stu Willder and Adrian Calvano will be there to support and educate men and women on the day. A free BBQ will be provided for men and women

Brisbane South Division has proudly launched another innovative initiative named “Connecting Men: Free Men’s health check up”. This program is based on the Pit Stop model. Pit Stop has proven very beneficial in heightening men’s awareness of their health and encouraging them to visit their GP for further health check up. The Pit Stop Men’s Health Check is run as a series of stations, each involving a quick, simple health check. Examples of the checks preformed are: • Blood Pressure • Waist measurement • Alcohol Consumption • Smoking Risks and more The Pit Stop is held in a non-medical environment, and is set up to be relaxed and fun. This allows participants to overcome any anxiety they may have about having a health check. We have planned more Pit Stop Men’s health check up events at different locations in Brisbane south catchments before the end of this year and for more information please feel free to contact Dr. Naitik Mehta at Brisbane south Division on 07 3274 1886 or e-mail on nmehta@brisbanesouth.com.au
